Ladies of the Flowers

A small cycle of paintings, oil on canvas, painted in December 2006, was inspired by paraphrased Giotto-style Late-Gothic paintings of gilded backgrounds, as well as human sensitivity for the ‘language of the flowers’ i.e. the hidden symbolism of flowers from times immemorial.

Flowers thus become an integral part of the short visual story that in various ways encourages the viewer to interpret these symbols, from a purely visual experience to literary, religious, or even philosophical domain. Ancient floral mythology is here intertwined with Christian floral iconography and complex Renaissance interpretations, thus each viewer can devise his own particular interpretation.
