Sculptor Andro Mohorovičić's commentary on the exhibition
Conversations from Previous Lives are spoken in symbols, in a mixed pen-and-ink, gilding, and colouring technique. Dressed in their best festive gowns resembling Renaissance costumes, women’s portraits are almost the sole theme of Ljerka Očić’s paintings.
Added details such as a lotus flower (the symbol of enlightenment and of the crown chakra!), a blackbird, an apple, angel’s wings, or a snake, transform these paintings, lacking landscape or interior, into mystical icons to the ones less familiar with the symbolism of Ljerka’s paintings, whilst the tenderness of expression and medieval simplicity in portraying female faces, emphasize this impression even more.
The author stretches the composition of her paintings outside their frames, painting also over the frames, as if by some magic wanting to draw the present into some painted past, and send her ‘conversations from previous lives’ into the future.
Visual coherence of the exhibited cycle is pleasing on the eye, and the multitude of minutely painted details transmits the author’s joy of painting to the interested viewer. This exhibition will bring joy to all those able to appreciate the harmony of colours, lines and motifs of the exhibited works.
